We talk a lot about the "rainbow umbrella." But like any storm, the strongest part of the umbrella is often the one bearing the most weight. Right now, that is the transgender community.
We do not get to celebrate Pride without fighting for trans existence. We do not get to claim "love" while ignoring "identity." And we certainly do not get to stand on the shoulders of trans ancestors and then pretend we don't see their descendants drowning.
LGBTQ+ culture is not a costume party. It is not a parade for corporations. It is a liferaft. And the trans community is not a "complicated" part of that raft—they are the ones who have been patching the holes while the rest of us slept.
The media only shows trans people in trauma. They show the funerals, the protests, the crying. They don't show the quiet joy of a trans man teaching his son to fish.
