This wasn't a crack that removed copy protection entirely. Instead, it was a "fixed executable." The original EXE checked for the CD by calling Windows' GetDriveType and ReadFile functions on D:\ (the disc). The fixed EXE was patched : the assembly jump (JNZ) that said “if CD not found → error” was changed to a NOP (no operation).
