“Who are you?” he whispered.
She laughed—a real, warm, sisterly laugh. “Chote, I already have. The police are three minutes away. I called them ten minutes ago. You have two bullets in this revolver. One for me, one for yourself. What will it be?”
“You’re not a monster, Chote,” Lilly said, smiling. “You’re an amateur. Now go get me my diary.”
The Rajvansh mansion in Jaipur was a fortress of old money and older secrets. When Aarav’s black Range Rover crunched the gravel driveway after four years, the house fell silent.
Aarav leaned in to touch her feet in respect. As he bent down, she whispered so softly that only he heard: “I know what you did to Rajesh in London.”
Lilly stood up. “Then tomorrow, I tell Vikram you tried to assault me. With your history, who will believe you? You’ll be back on a plane to face the Thames inquiry.”
“I told you. Lilly Bhabhi. That’s all you need to know.” She raised the gun. “The family will find you dead with the diary. They will think you tried to steal it. Vikram will be ashamed. Maa ji will have a stroke. And I will be the grieving widow who consoles everyone.”
Welcome home, Agent.
Lilly stood in the doorway, holding a silenced pistol.
That night, she entered his room without knocking. He was cleaning a revolver.
The plan was elegant: On the night of Karva Chauth, while the family fasted and prayed for their husbands’ long lives, Lilly would slip Maa ji a sleeping pill in her milk. Aarav would pick the lock on the safe. They would take the diary, replace it with a fake, and escape before dawn.
