My brothers in Islam, the Prophet ﷺ said: “There are two blessings which many people squander: health and free time.” (Bukhārī) Look carefully—the Prophet ﷺ did not say “some people” or “a few people.” He said This is the state of the majority of mankind, and even many Muslims. “By time, indeed mankind is in loss, except those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.” (Sūrah al-‘Aṣr 103:1-3) This sūrah, which the Salaf would recite before parting, is enough to wake the heedless.
Make a small change today. Commit to 15 minutes of Qur’an after Fajr. Commit to attending a study circle ( ḥalaqah ) or listening to a lecture by the scholars of Sunnah—those who follow the way of the Companions, not the people of innovation.
Fear Allah and be mindful of Him. The Prophet ﷺ also said: “Take advantage of five before five: your youth before your old age, your health before your sickness, your wealth before your poverty, your free time before your busyness, and your life before your death.” (Al-Ḥākim, authentic) This is the complete framework of a believer’s life.
