The chat window was gone. The browser was gone. In its place was a single, pixelated image, loading line by line from top to bottom, the way images did on a 28.8k modem. It was a photograph. Grainy. Dark. A hallway, lined with floral wallpaper that might have been pretty in 1974. At the end of the hallway, a door. Just a crack open.

Her heart performed a small, violent flip. She typed back quickly, her fingers clumsy.

stop.

And through the crack, an eye.

look behind you.

Then, from the speakers, a whisper. Not a voice, exactly. The sound of a whisper traveling through a very long pipe. Cold air, forced through wet leaves.

ya. parents r asleep. did u find it?

Mariana turned her head, just a fraction. The living room was dark. The grandfather clock ticked. The front door was locked, chain on. The window curtains were drawn. Nothing.

The dial-up tone screamed. A digital shriek that meant connection . For Mariana, fifteen years old in the summer of 1996, that sound was the key to the world. Her parents, asleep upstairs, believed she was reading Jane Eyre for extra credit. Instead, she was in the flickering blue glow of the family’s Gateway 2000, waiting for the words to appear. Fear-1996-

And in the hallway outside her bedroom, the floral wallpaper seemed just a little darker than she remembered.
