In the preface to the 2024 edition, he wrote:

Then he heard the professor’s voice—not as a memory, but as a principle. Bukhovtsev had a motto, printed in tiny italics in the 1978 edition: “Do not solve the problem as given. Solve the principle the problem hides.”

Thus, the physics lived.

He solved it in twenty minutes. The examiners were silent. Then the oldest professor—a man who had once shared tea with Bukhovtsev in 1975—removed his glasses and said: Describe its motion for all initial conditions
